(Vancouver Whitecaps News Release) - The Whitecaps put behind them the disappointment of Friday's semifinal as they downed the Central Florida Krush of Orlando 3-1 to win the W-League Consolation Match at Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, NJ.
Two quick goals by Amber Allen early in the first half paced Vancouver to a 2-0 lead. Though the Krush pulled a goal back before the break, their comeback bid was ended when midfielder Kate Tullis misdirected a header into her own goal.
In five W-League seasons, the Whitecaps have earned gold (2004), silver (2001), and two bronze (2002 and 2005). This was Vancouver's second ever appearance in the W-League's consolation match. In 2002, they downed the Denver Lady Cougars 2-0 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC. Vancouver's all-time playoff record is now 7-2-2.
A turnover in the 10th minute gave Vancouver a two-on-one with Katie Thorlakson dishing to Amber Allen in the middle and she fired it in. A minute later Thorlakson floated a great ball over the defense to a breaking Allen, who lifted it over the onrushing goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the playoffs and 17th on the season.
A nice cross from Kim Montgomery was headed in by Stacy Bishop in the 39th minute to cut the lead to one. It was only the Krush's second shot of the half as the Whitecaps defense stifled the Krush offense led by US international Danielle Fotopoulos.
In the 73rd minute the Whitecaps broke in with substitute Ashley McGhee crossing the ball back where Central Florida's Katie Tullis headed the ball into her own goal.
The Krush had an early chance as Fotopoulos hit the crossbar with a good left-footed shot in the fifth minute.
The Whitecaps dominated most of the first half, outshooting the Krush 9-3. Close calls included a powerful shot from Brittany Timko at 20-minute mark that hit the far post; a shot from Sophie Schmidt in the 26th that deflected just wide; Timko missing the net from good position in the 29th after good work by Thorlakson and a blast from Amber Allen that was well saved.
The Krush applied pressure to start the second half, with Rhonda Jones volleying over in the 48th and Fotopoulos getting a good header on goal in the 61st with Sian Bagshawe making a good save.
Tempers flared in the late stages with two Vancouver players being ejected. Thorlakson was red carded in the 81st after throwing an elbow at defender Heather Mitts, and then in injury time Kara Lang was sent off for kicking at an opponent.
