KRISTEN HEXTALL NAMED TO W-LEAGUE TEAM OF THE WEEK

Wednesday, June 03, 2009

TAMPA – United Soccer Leagues announced today the W-League Team of the Week for the eighth week of USL competition, honoring Ottawa forward Michelle Evans as Player of the Week for her two goal, three assist performance in Fury victories at London and Hamilton on the weekend.

Evans led the comeback for the Fury in a 3-1 victory over the London Gryphons on Friday, May 30. After falling behind 1-0, the striker brought things level, equalizing in the 44th minute before setting up teammates Amber Hearn (74th) and Sari Raber (82nd) to clinch the victory.

The next day Evans notched the third goal in the 68th minute and assisted on the fourth in the 78th minute during a 5-0 Ottawa rout over the Hamilton Avalanche.

To the south, Atlanta midfielder Michelle Buskey scored two goals in the Silverbacks 4-0 win over Richmond on Friday, May 30.  With her team already leading 2-0, Buskey entered the match in the 58th minute and scored in the 61st and 73rd to put the result out of reach.

"Megan’s performance coming of the bench gave us the spark to finish the game off. Scoring two goals within 15 minutes of entering the match was huge," said Silverbacks General Manager Laura Fedrigo.

In the northeast it was Connecticut’s Fortuna Valaj who finished a 60th minute free kick that was the difference in the Passion’s 1-0 victory at the New York Magic.

"Fortuna set up just outside the box and buried a crucial free kick," said Passion Head Coach Mike Micros. "It was a hard fought game and a good first win of the season."

Tampa Bay keeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi played the first 45 minutes of Hellenic’s 2-2 draw with Charlotte on Friday, May 30. Lofton-Malachi made seven saves for the first half shutout.

"Mallori’s saves were crucial going towards the result," said Hellenic President Mary Anne Bishop.
