begin U.S. training camp with win
COLTS NECK, New Jersey – The Costa Rica under-20 women’s national team posted a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Wildcats in a friendly on Wednesday at Bucks Mill Park.
The game was part of the Ticas’ camp in the United States ahead of their participation in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup next month in Canada.
Melissa Herrera gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, taking advantage of a defensive miscue and striking from inside the penalty area.
That advantage was doubled 12 minutes later, when team captain Mariana Benavides netted off a free kick.
New Jersey halved the deficit in the 51st minute through Erica Murphy.
Before traveling to the FIFA event, Costa Rica will also face Sky Blue FC (July 25, in Lakewood, New Jersey) and the New York Magic (July 30, in New Rochelle, New York).
Once based in Canada, the Central Americans will square off against Group D rivals France (Montreal, August 6), Paraguay (Montreal, August 9) and New Zealand (Toronto, August 13).
